A deep appreciation for sugar and the confections made from it, led her down a rabbit hole of recipes and histories. Years of admiration gave way to the horrors of the sugar cane plantations. She could no longer work with sugar without acknowledging the deep trauma of how it came to be. A work study in the archival department of her undergraduate college sparked an interest in preservation, ultimately leading to the pursuit of a master’s in food studies at NYU. Here, she began to take an academic approach to the topic of sweetness, taking classes in food writing and comparative cuisine. She hopes to populate her blog, The Recipe Preservationist, with history, recipes and stories centered around the preserving effect of sugar in all its ambivalent forms. Sugar is also a means of connecting with her Caribbean and British heritage. In her free time, she is hunting down family recipes and remembrances – all through the lens of sugar
